Keep is an asymmetrical competitive level designed for 1v1 and 6 player Free for All gameplay.
Set in a Castle environment, players can find various weapons to help them get an edge against their opponents; however, players are only allowed two weapon slots. This was decided to prevent weapon hoarding, and to help balance out gameplay and feel more like a traditional competitive shooter rather than Fortnite.
Originally, Keep was being designed for 8 player team based game modes; however, to help reduce the feeling of congestion and allow more player movement, I decided to change it to a smaller player capacity of 6, and set up the map for Free for All game modes instead.
The level design originates from an older idea I had been developing in Halo Infinites forge editor called, “Rift”. I shelved that project after the announcement of Firefight coming to the game where I developed and later released “Wildcat” which was suited for the PvE game mode instead.
After nearly 5 months, I dusted off the schematics and brought the project back to life. Except this time with a new name, and an entirely new look!
I used the Unreal Editor for Fortnite to build this level design because of the vast amount of PvP elements that are available from the kits already provided by Epic. And for this being my first project in UEFN, I’m very happy with how it turned out.
One of the challenges I faced while developing Keep was during the art pass. I ran into a few snags with the lighting elements. But with the help of the UEFN forums, and some tips from a few of my fellow developers, I was able to get the lighting where I wanted it.
I learned so much about UEFN while working on this project. I can't wait to further dive into the editor and make more awesome stuff!
